STEP 1 ~ CHOOSE YOUR BLOG NICHE(S)
Which topics capture your heart and passions?
Would you like to educate your followers with your personal experiences and knowledge? Perhaps a healthy living, how-to, food or home decorating blog might be your cup of tea. Speaking of tea, if you fancy yourself a tea aficionado, why not start a blog all about tea?
Do you wish to inspire? How about a positivity blog, overcoming adversity or ideas for paying it forward and helping others.
Have you got mad problem solving skills? Sharing your creative solutions to common problems in the home, life or world might be right up your alley.
Perhaps you’d rather entertain your audience; how about a book or movie review blog. You might also have an utterly adorable pet who should have his/her own entertaining blog.
There are endless blog niches out there awaiting your attention and voice.
STEP 2 ~ BECOMING THE GO-TO BLOGGER IN YOUR NICHE
When I started my first blog (a healthy living and more blog) in 2011, I dove right in to the deep end with passion, ideas and enthusiasm but little understanding of the industry. So I created a category on everything, and I mean everything I was passionate about in life.
From health tips, to recipes, dogs, gardening, photography, fashion, beauty and how to host snail races in your backyard. Ok, that last one is a joke, but if you’re game, why not create that snail race blog!
In my early blogging years, I had success, but my blog was just not achieving the goals I had set. So I hired a professional to take a look at my cyber home to diagnose why the heck my audience was stopping by for a visit, then vamoosing.
It didn’t take her long to discover the problem. I wasn’t the authority (not that you need a degree to be a blogger, just good writing skills and honest information that is helpful to others) on any one thing because I was all over the place.
People in search of healthy homemade dog food recipes didn’t stick around because my next five posts went from fashion to beauty and then to those darned snail races. Btw, put your money on Speedy, he’s got a gift!
Her solution; keep it simple, baby. My blogging consultant was 100% correct and my life in the blogging world completely changed when I heeded her advice.
Back to you and your shiny new blog; pick two to three niches where you can dominate and leave your readers wanting more of what you’ve got to say.
STEP 3 ~ NAME YOUR BLOG
Your blog should have a spiffy, unforgettable name, which is actually a 2-step process. Why? Because you will need to check to make sure the domain name you are considering is available both for your actual blog and across social media channels.
What the heck is a Domain Name?
Domain Name ~ noun
“Domain names are used to identify your IP address, otherwise known as your website’s cyber address.”
For example purposes, I’ll name my new blog, “My Dog Is a Blogger”. The next step is to do a domain name search (this site is very helpful and free) HERE to make sure the name isn’t already in use.
Let’s say [Mydogisablogger dot com] is taken, but the dot biz and other second-level domains of the same name are still available. Since you’ll want your brand to stand out, be like Frozen and let it go.
Take your time choosing the right blog name and remember, the name of your blog is one of the most important decisions you will make. Here’s a cool free blog name generator that might help you in this process ~ Blog Name Ideas.
STEP 4 ~ SECURE YOUR DOMAIN NAME
Once you’ve selected your blog name, the next step is to secure the Domain(s).
If you have a good feeling about your blog idea/niche and believe it might have potential to become popular, you might want to consider purchasing more than just the dot com domains.
I own more than just the dot com of my blog name, for two reasons. One, I didn’t want my competition to scoop up one or more of the sub-domains of my blog (unfortunately, it happens). This is an affordable way to protect your brand and ensure consistency on the web. For example, my additional domains (.us, .biz, .co, .net, .org, and .info) only cost from $3.00 to $9.99 each.
Secondarily, you can actually forward any sub-domains you purchase to your actual website. This not only protects you, it guides any folks who accidentally type in [YourBlog . co, etc] directly to your home page. Leave no potential new subscriber behind, my friend.
STEP 5 ~ HOSTING
Note; if you’ve decided to start with a free blog (you cannot generate income with free blog domains), you can skip this section.
Home stretch, darlings. Now it’s time to find a host for our new cyber home.
What is “hosting”? No, it doesn’t involve scrumptious hors d’oeuvres and some fine wine, bummer, right?
Hosting ~ noun
“A Web host is in the business of providing server space, Web services and file maintenance for Web sites controlled by individuals or companies”.
En English, por favor? Think of Hosting Companies like the cyber city in which your new blog will reside. The city maintains the streets and keeps them well maintained so people can visit you quickly, ideally, without problems.
You pay the city taxes on your home to keep things in your community running efficiently and we pay hosting companies a fee to give our blog a safe, quality home. Make sense?
To set up hosting for your new blog, go to hosting sites such as Host Gator
or DreamHost or any hosting company you prefer, to set up hosting.
Now… give yourself a big high five, because you’ve now completed the steps to set up your brand new blog! Congratulations are very much in order.

Until next time, work it, girlfriend!
