Why The New Apple Series 4 Watch Heart Monitoring Features Could Be A Total Game Changer

We get up, often rush through our day, make little time for self care, hit the sheets exhausted, only to rinse and repeat day after day. Sound familiar? I know, it’s so easy to get lost in our routine that we forget to actually L I V E.

Life has a way of waking us up like a screeching alarm clock and with one unexpected health diagnosis, our lives can change on a dime.

That handsome man of mine had been dealing with something called AFib for many years (Atrial fibrillation, also called AFib or AF, is a quivering or irregular heartbeat (arrhythmia) that can lead to heart-related complications. At least 2.7 million Americans have AFib). Source ~ Heart.org

Because it was important for Carl to track his heart rate, breathing and exercise, he purchased an Apple Watch (series 2, and later, Series 3) years ago and was thrilled with all the data it provided him in a neat summary each day.

I was so impressed with his uber smart watch, that he surprised me with my very own Apple Watch as an anniversary gift.  To say I surprisingly fell in love with this smartwatch would be the understatement of the year.

Yes, I did the happy dance, and yes, my new watch counted each of my joyful steps!

HEART MONITORING

The folks at Apple have made topping themselves an art form and the brand spankin’ new Apple Watch Series 4 (released September 21, 2018) redefines the term “smart watch” boasting an impressive list of critical heart and health data features. Important note, Apple has received clearance from the Food and Drug Administration for both the ECG feature, as well as the atrial fibrillation (AFib) feature.

FALL DETECTION

Apple Series 4 Watches will automatically initiate an emergency call and send a message to your designated emergency contact should you take a fall.

Talk about a brilliant new feature, the dangers of taking a fall, no matter our age, is very real. With the Fall Detection feature, I am able to worry a bit less about my parents while they wear their Series 4 Watches. In all honesty, this watch also provides me with a safety net too. I once fell getting out of the bathtub many years ago and I was the only one home at the time (Apple Watches Series 2 ~ 4 can be worn in the tub or shower, but only Version 4 can detect a fall).

BREATHING MONITORING & REMINDERS

Apple Watches (older versions offer this tool as well) offer a free Breathe App which reminds you to take time to breathe several times every day (you can set this healthy reminder to suite your own needs). You can choose to breathe for one minute or adjust it to longer periods and go through a guided deep breathing meditation period via animation and gentle taps to help you stay focused.

How Deep Breaths Affect Mind & Body

According to The American Institute of Stress, taking a moment to concentrate on deep breathing several times each day can:

♥ Decrease metabolism

♥ Relax muscles

♥ Slow breathing

♥ Lower blood pressure

ACTIVITY & EXERCISE MONITORING

Not only has the new and improved Activity and Exercise monitoring feature free app been a game changer for the hubster, I was surprised to find it (she, who’ve I aptly named Scarlett) not only provides me with useful health data to share with my doc, Scarlett also reminds me to breathe, stand and move, and acts as my own personal cheerleader.

The Health Risks of Too Much Sitting

According to the Mayo Clinic, there are several significant health risks that can be linked to being a couch potato. They report, “Research has linked sitting for long periods of time with a number of health concerns. They include obesity, increased blood pressure, high blood sugar, excess body fat around the waist and abnormal cholesterol levels.”

Apple Watches remind you several times throughout the day to stand if you have lost track of time in the sitting position.

Exercise Tracker

This feature allows you to define your preferred activity for the day (from walking to Stairmaster, etc). The Series 4 has added even more workout options to track your progress, including Yoga and more. It will track not only your steps, but calories burned, movement data and heart rate, making it the ultimate workout partner. (This feature is also available on older models).

So how much do they run? Think of Apple products like your favorite luxury beauty line. No matter where you buy, the price is set by the brand.

THE FINAL WORD

The Apple Series 4 Smartwatch is so smart, it should be a Mensa member. Whether you are simply looking to track your daily steps, up your water intake (yup, they have an app for that too), or train yourself to breathe and be more mindful, this watch has you covered. If you or a loved one needs daily heart monitoring data for their doctor, or might be at risk for falls, this watch can serve as a very proactive health tool.

Exciting health update on my love, he recently had a procedure done that has completely corrected his AFib. Now my only problem is keeping him from sprinting up the stairs to secretly work out before he gets cleared by his doc. God is good.

Until next time, darlings, wishing you good health and much happiness.
