FOUNDATIONS & BB CREAMS

There are several important reasons to apply either a foundation or BB Cream to our mature skin, but not all foundations are created equal, I have learned.

For example, I read that a popular luxury brand was receiving rave reviews for a foundation designed specifically for aging skin. However, my results were a far cry from what was advertised. Instead of it hiding my fine lines, it was more like a neon pointy sign that read, “and you thought YOU had wrinkles, ha!”.

And so I kept searching for the right product. Our ultimate goals are to provide sun protection (if not in the foundation itself, in your moisturizer), moisturizing, cover age spots and soften lines. Try to avoid heavy foundations which can actually transform a line into a crevice, and nobody wants that, darlings!

I have actually used a BB Cream Tinted Primer by Tarte as my foundation for years. It has enough coverage to minimize my growing collection of dark spots (too much basking in the sun as a teen) SPF 30.

Application Tips

For that air-brushed look most of us are seeking, try using a makeup sponge or tool. I’m a huge fan of the BeautyBlender sponges, they are easy to use and clean.

Squeeze a dab of your foundation onto the back of your hand. Using a clean sponge or BeautyBlender, apply foundation to face using gentle tapping and patting motions. This technique is called stippling and will leave your skin with a more natural, finished look.

I’m also a huge fan of AmorePacific’s compress foundation with an impressive SPF 50. It’s easy to throw in your purse for touch ups and the coverage is flawless. Note, this clever product comes with its own application sponge.

CONCEALER

Let’s consider concealer one of our beauty BFF’s. Not only does it help to hide dark circles under the eyes, it can also camouflage any age spots not covered by foundation.

Application Tips

The area around and under the eye is very delicate, so using a soft-bristled brush is key to both proper skin care and a beautifully blended look. Using brush, apply concealer (one to two shades lighter than your foundation) OVER (I know, I just blew your mind, right?) foundation, with gentle dabbing motions. You can use a sponge or BeautyBlender to go over the area so that the lines between foundation and concealer is blended.

BLUSH

Adding a few brush strokes of a blush is an easy way to brighten your beautiful face, draw attention upward towards your cheeks and give you a natural glow.

I’ve absolutely fallen in love with Too Faced’s Sweetheart blush line. While it’s typically considered a mature skin no-no to add shimmery products to our faces (draws attention to lines and creases) this clever product combines several different beautiful tones together with just a kiss of shimmer. I find it illuminates my cheeks and gives my face a healthy, happy glow.

Application Tips

Blush should bring out the most in your cheeks. To achieve the perfect “oh my, I’m blushing” look, place a finger along your laugh line. Using a blush brush, such as a Kabuki Blush Brush, apply blush color to cheeks up to, but not passed your finger.
