These Sleep Tips Just Might Leave You Drooling

Have you ever dreamt of buying a one-way ticket for Mr. Sandman to come visit and stay? Of course you haven’t, that would imply that one had actually fallen asleep to have had said dream : )

We aren’t alone, darlings, not that this news eases our bleary eyes and foggy brains from sleep depravation. Menopause has claimed partial responsibility for the sheep we count at night being MIA. Mine may have joined the witness protection program to get away, just sayin. I can count some sheep, girlfriends.

Over the years, I’ve tried countless insomnia remedies, some helped a bit, others were a total bust. It wasn’t until a few years ago when I started combining some of my favorite natural remedies, that SeƱor Sandman and I started sleeping in the same bed (please don’t tell my hubby).

Some nights, I may skip a few steps, depending upon how much wind down time I have left in my day, but each step sprinkles another layer of sleepy sand over my mind and body.

Lavender

Did you know that according to research, the scent of lavender eases insomnia and anxiety? It’s true, and that’s not all!

According to the National Sleep Foundation, “Lavender has been shown to decrease heart rate and blood pressure, potentially putting you in a more relaxed state.”

The lovely scent of lavender has also been reported to increase the quantity of deep REM sleep and help you wake up feeling more vigorous.

Supplements

CALCIUM

Calcium is not only important for bone health, it’s your ally in search of elusive shut eye. Our brains use the amino acid tryptophan to make melatonin, naturally. Calcium gives our brains a little help turning that tryptophan into melatonin, which translates to better sleep.

Organic Plant Based Calcium

MAGNESIUM

Magnesium is another sleep encouraging supplement that works hand-in-hand with Calcium.

A restful night’s sleep begins with a relaxed mind and body. Magnesium is a neurotransmitter regulator, whispering relaxing words to our brains and nervous system via signals. Magnesium is another friend to melatonin, which guides the bodies’ sleep-wake cycles.

Doctor’s Best High Absorption Magnesium

Chamomile Tea

Chamomile has long been used as a mild tranquilizer and natural sleep inducer, working with receptors in the brain. It is also known for it’s antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

Read Any Good Books Lately?

Researchers have found that cracking open your favorite book and reading for as little as six minutes can reduce stress levels by 68%. It snagged the top sleep aid spot, with a cup of tea or soothing music, finishing second and third.

Sleep Masks

My mom still sleeps with a hand towel draped over her eyes when she sleeps. Turns out, Mama does know best and there’s data to back her up (hope she doesn’t read this, I’ll never hear the end of it ~ lol).

When our brains sense darkness, they tap our friend melatonin on the shoulder and say, “get going, it’s bed time”. I might be paraphrasing, but you get the dreamy picture.

Eye masks have come a very long way and are a portable and effective solution to the total darkness our night time brains seek.

Love this Jonet! I was just thinking of this as a post myself. I have been having a tough time sleeping, and i take meds for it. I would like to try melatonin to see if that helps. I love lavendar and use Dr Teals in the bath, lavendar epsom salts for magnesium, basically for sore muscles.
All great tips! I have a diffuser and essential oils, perhaps I need to put them near my bedside table as opposed to the bathroom!

Hi sweet Jess. I too have had issues falling and staying asleep for many years. I used to use a medication, but decided to go the natural route due to the side effects.

Melatonin is a great natural sleep aid, also make sure to take calcium in the morning and magnesium a few hours before bedtime. I have my diffuser on my nightstand and use lavender oil. It smells wonderful and is so relaxing.
