I hope you packed a cardigan, darlings because today, we’re headed to the picturesque mountains of Idaho to meet Cheryl Tucker, our latest She’s Got Style Global Fashionista.

Cheryl, a fashion blogger and outdoor enthusiast, has mastered the art of layering seasonal looks to perfection. We asked her to share her styling tips with our tribe and she was kind enough to agree. YEA!

FCO50: You live in the beautiful mountains of Idaho. How do you extend the wear of your favorite pieces into the next season?

CHERYL: The weather in the mountains is consistently cool to cold all year long, so I buy layering pieces most of the time. It’s one of the fun things about fashion and living in the climate where I live. Most of your clothes can work throughout the year.

FCO50: You have a gift for stylishly layering your looks. Can you share some of your tips?

CHERYL: I am a big fan of scarves for adding warmth with almost any outfit from casual to dressy. And cardigans of all weights are a big staple in my closet. I’m not afraid to add a cardigan to anything from dresses to shorts to jeans. I also will wrap a scarf over my shoulders with jeans, shorts almost anything. It seems to add a touch of elegance to a look.

FCO50: We love that at 40+ you rock some of the hottest trends in fashion. What would you tell a fellow mid lifer interested in experimenting with fashion trends for the first time?

CHERYL: First, love what you are wearing. Wear the trends or styles that fit your personality. I am a little edgy and feel good when my outfit is a little sassy and breaks some of the rules I was raised under.

Also, don’t be afraid to try a trend thinking it won’t work for you. If you love fashion, you love making trends your own. For example. I love tunics but am short wasted and only 5’5” tall. They usually overwhelm me. But I have found that if I tuck the hem into my belt loop or do a half tuck I can wear tunics stylishly! I learned to wear over the knee boots, off shoulder tops and more just by tweaking the trend to fit my style.

FCO50: What are your go to make up and anti-aging products?

CHERYL: I am not big on topical products and never have been. I wash my face at night with Olay cleanser and moisturize with that brand too. And that is about it. I have tried different products but am not a connoisseur.

I believe being healthy is the best beauty product. I eat as healthy as I can with lots of veggies, fruits, nuts and seeds and limited meats. I don’t deny myself anything I love, I just keep it in moderation. I drink lots of water and exercise almost daily. When I say exercise I mean I am active doing something I love. For me that is hiking and running. Stretching is so important I have found as I age. It enables me to continue the activities I love. I always tell people to think about the activities they loved as children and do them every day!

I live most of the year in the rural mountains of Idaho on twenty acres of forest and I love that part of my life. It’s the perfect place for a person who has hermit genes like I think I do. There is lots of solitude and down time to be reflective and practice your art which in my case is cooking, blogging, my home, things like that. It’s also the perfect place to hike and trail run.

The concept of age doesn’t hold much space in my life. It is what it is and I am just trying to focus on quality of life. For me that means making things up as I go! Family is most important to me and keeping those bonds strong comes first. But after that it is all about learning, growing, smiling and adding kindness to the world while filling my soul up with joy.

Thank you, dear Cheryl, for sharing your fabulous styling tips with our tribe.

Such a great post to read! Loved Cheryl’s comment about layering things and often being able to wear the same items through the year but layering them up appropriately for the temperature. I live in the UK and I always say that here you don’t really need a ‘summer’ and ‘winter’ wardrobe as the temp doesn’t chnage THAT MUCH throughout the year. That’s why I like investing in pieces that are layer-able, versatile and trans-seasonal because they’re so worth it!

Hi Eleanor, thanks so much for your insightful comment. I agree, with Cheryl and your advice on the power of layering. It’s an easy way to extend the “street time” some of our favorite pieces get throughout the year. Xo Jonet
