The Inside Scoop About 1 Day Juice Cleanses
You’ve probably heard all the hype about intermittent fasting and the healthy power of a good juice cleanse.
According to The Chalkboard Mag, “By drinking only whole food juices, you’re reducing the amount of input and stress on your gut. This allows your body to heal and recharge, while also flooding it with vital phytonutrients. You’re giving your body time to play catch-up while pressing reset on your health.”
It takes our bodies from 24 to 72 hours to digest food and move it on out, if ya know what I mean! The digestive process involves several key organs including the stomach, small intestine, large intestine, not to mention the pancreas, gall bladder and liver.
Giving these major body organs a break only makes sense, at least to us.
My hubby’s goal was to lose a few pounds, a juice cleanse claim widely talked about at the moment.
I wanted to give my busy digestive track a break and cleanse my body.
I stopped by our local Clean Juice store and picked up two cleanse six packs. Their one day cleanse comes with six different fruit vegetable mix juices.
Our cleanse day began with a surprisingly yummy green juice consisting of freshly pressed organic cucumber, apple, kale, spinach and mint. My hubby, who is not a juicer like his bride, appreciated the fact that he couldn’t taste the spinach or kale.
It certainly wasn’t as filling as a plate of eggs and whole wheat toast, but we were on a mission to give our digestive systems a break.
This juice was probably one of our favorite juices of the bunch. A tropical mix of organic carrots, pineapple, orange and turmeric, it was refreshing and scrumptious.
How are we feeling? Hungry, hungry hippo!
At this point, I find myself strangely craving chocolate right NOW ~ please allow me to emphasize the N O W in NOW! I’m not talking, gee, I’d love a piece of chocolate.. It was more like fantasizing about putting my mouth under a never ending stream of dark chocolate ~ ya know, Willy Wonka style!
The clock strikes 12:00 and we are more than ready for “lunch”. On the menu, a blend of organic cucumber, celery, spinach, kale, ginger and lemon. This juice had a more acidic taste to it, but we reminded ourselves and each other of all the healing powers of those fresh ingredients and how they were helping our digestive systems.
Now that we’d had 3 juices, we were beginning to get headaches. My husband’s headache started after his second juice. After doing a bit of research, I promptly called him and told him to drink more water. Since we were busy drinking all these juices, it left us feeling hydrated. Yet drinking water to help flush our systems is a very important part of the cleansing process. We started drinking more water and the headaches vanished!
Here’s where Carl and I had different juice cleansing experiences. After juice #3, I started having to make frequent trips to the potty, or for my Brit friends, the loo. He, escaped this part of the cleansing journey.
So our hopes of these healthy juices filling our rumbling tummies had officially been dashed. Right now, I’m just a girl, standing in front of a green juice bottle, asking it to be a double burger, fries and a milkshake!
On to afternoon snack time and this one had my hubby worried. The juice is black and for good reason. This juice is designed to cleanse the liver, and it contains filtered water, activated charcoal, organic lemons and maple syrup.
It actually wasn’t bad at all, with no charcoal taste (what does charcoal taste like anyway?). It tasted lemony.
By now we’ve waved buh bye to hungry in the rear view mirror and moved on to HANGRY. You know, that lovely feeling of being so darned hungry you get ANGRY! This was not the day to call me for advice or encouragment!
Carl and I were now on the phone secretly plotting his stealth burger pickup meal from Red Robin on the way home (don’t tell our tummies). True story. But alas, our dinner would come in liquid form.
The hubster arrived home and I hand him his dinner, which was quite easy to prepare (just open the fridge). Tonight, we dined on a juice made from organic apples, carrots, beets and lemon.
Although I’m on the beet fan wagon, my hubby, not so much. He was dreading this juice the most, but even he had to admit it wasn’t bad.
We “ate” our dinner together, while reminiscing about the joys of chewing actual food. Ahhh, good times.
The good news is that after 5 juices, we are feeling a bit more full, although I can’t possibly fathom the reason.
Our last juice was well worth the wait. It tasted like a scrumptious, rich smoothie of love featuring cashews, sea salt, maple syrup, vanilla, and cinnamon all blend together perfectly.
It was like our little treat for cleansing! Strangely enough, by this time, I was actually starting to feel more full and our food cravings had vanished.
Time for bed, and I’m wondering if I’ll make it through the night without at least one more pitstop. I did, thankfully, however that burger, milkshake and fries…. had it at 2:00 a.m. in my dreams and it was fantabulous!
One would think we would have woken up ravenously hungry, yet that was not the case. We felt strangely satisfied, and resumed our normal eating routine.
Would we do it again? Absolutely! I’m not going to kid you, there are moments you’d beg your mama for a hearty meal, but keeping the healthy, cleansing goal in mind, helped Carl and I get through the day.
Carl lost 3 pounds ~ he is thrilled and ready to do this again next month.
I feel relaxed and have less tummy bloating, so I’m in for next month too!
