Tips For Combating Self Doubt
I hope your holidays were filled with much happiness and joy.
Welcome back to Fabulously Chic Over 50, we’re so happy to see your smiling faces once again and send our heart-felt thanks for joining our tribe and journeys.
To kick off the New Year, I wanted to talk beauty. Not the perfect lipstick kind of beauty, or the latest anti-aging product review. Nope, I’m talking about the beauty that lies inside all of us, that shines like a beacon from our hearts and souls.
It’s pretty easy to get caught up in the endless advertiser campaigns that blind us with overly photoshopped photos of women described as “beautiful”. Buying into the hype can take a huge bite out of our egos.
If I were to ask you how you’d rate your self esteem right now, what would you give yourself on a scale of 0 – 10? If your score was low, you aren’t alone, my friends.
Many of us are masters at creating our own negativity vortex, as every ugly word that’s ever been hurled our way gets played over and over again in our heads on an endless, destructive loop.
What are you saying to yourself in the quiet hours? Are you using sentences like:
I’m not _____ enough
I’ll never be able to ________
I’ll never accomplish my goals
In the iconic words of the Eagles, “Just remember this, my girl, when you look up in the sky, you can see the stars and still not see the light”. Translation: the negative reflection we see in the mirror is most likely not in alignment with reality.
The song Already Gone continues, “So often times it happens that we live our lives in chains, and we never even know we have the key”. Isn’t it time we unlock the heavy chains that have bound us to sadness and self doubt? Time to update and uplift our inner dialogue, to change the channel in our heads to one of positivity, self acceptance and love? After all, we really do have the key!
Research shows thinking positive thoughts has the power to make us happier people.
So as we make that annual New Year’s Resolution List, let’s save some room for a true beauty makeover, from the inside out, shall we? According to an article in Psychology Today, “Positive self-talk seeks to bring the positive out of the negative to help you do better, go further, or just keep moving forward.”
I leave positive Post It Notes all over my house, so that even on my darkest days, the moments I truly believe I absolutely suck or I’m not good enough, I have a safety net of uplifting words.
I’ve placed them on my bathroom mirror so I begin each new day with a shot of YES I CAN!
There are more positive affirmations on my fridge, on my desktop computer screen and even on a chalkboard in my laundry room. I am literally surrounded by my inner cheerleader who just needed an invitation to come out and pump me up.
The next time you reach into your negativity bag and allow the self-esteem killing words to play through your mind, replace them with new ones. For every negative thought, counter it with two good ones. Say them out loud, with confidence and absorb them into your heart and soul. Soon you will believe the good instead of the bad.
In case you need a little assistance in the cheerleading department, here are 101 Positive Things To Say To Myself For Your Self Esteem.
Since I’ve already got my cheerleader uniform on and my sparkly pom poms are all warmed up, let me leave you with this, my friends;
YOU are good
YOU are worthy
YOU are enough
YOU are beautiful
It’s a brand new year, my friends. A chance for a fresh start, new beginnings, attitudes, goals and success. Believe in You because you CAN! As the saying goes, “She believed she could, so she did“!
I’d love to hear your thoughts, feelings, hopes dreams, fears, anything you feel you’d like to share with our tribe. I’d be willing to bet you are not alone in your biggest fears or worries.
May all your hopes and dreams come true this year, darlings.
