What if you could step back in time to the roaring 20’s without the assistance of a magic time machine? How would it feel to wander the same chic hotel hallways as Bobby Kennedy, or to stay in the same elegantly appointed suite as John Barrymore or Cornelius Vanderbilt?
Thanks to the magnificently restored, four-plus-star, award-winning, historic Poinsett Hotel in Greenville, South Carolina, you can do just that!
Poinsett Hotel was originally constructed for an impressive $1.5 million (which translates to over 2 billion dollars today!) and opened its doors on June 20, 1925.
This Southern hotel jewel was declared “Carolina’s Finest” and was a favorite among distinguished guests including Bobby Kennedy, John Barrymore, Liberace, Amelia Earhart and Cornelius Vanderbilt.
But the times, they change and Poinsett Hotel struggled to survive. By early 1990, this historic gem was one of South Carolina’s most endangered historical sites.
Owned by Greenville area native Ann Bible until 1996, this grand hotel and it’s rich history were in capable hands as Ms. Bible made it her personal mission to see this beautiful landmark preserved as a historic treasure.
Working closely with then South Carolina Senator Strom Thurmond to save the hotel she cherished, Ms. Bible and the senator were rewarded in 1982 when Poinsett Hotel made history once again by securing its place on both the prestigious National Register of Historic Places and The South Carolina National Register of Historic Places.
Enter visionary hotel developers Steve Dopp and Greg Lenox, who purchased Poinsett Hotel in 1990 and revived this Greenville landmark with over $19 million dollars in renovations.
Dopp and Lenox made heroic efforts to preserve the original ambiance and charm of this 1920’s hotel, painstakingly restoring it’s original tile floors, iron staircases and elegant crown molding which can be found throughout this dazzling hotel.
Doesn’t this floor and staircase look like a scene right out of The Great Gatsby?
Our Junior Suite was spacious, honored the hotel’s history with soft gold and blue accents and featured a stunning view of the courtyard and Main Street.
We’ve stayed in a few historic hotels over the years, and temperature control is often a factor. Not so in our suite, as it featured a digital thermostat that allowed us to keep our room temp to our liking.
When it comes to luxury hotels, I’ll admit to having some pretty high standards. I love a bed that bridges the gap between support and comfort and the Westin got everything right with their exclusive Heavenly Pillow-Top Mattresses.
I’m crazy about soft, fluffy down comforters and at Poinsett Hotel, you get not one but TWO! Finally, I’m obsessed with high-quality down pillows that cradle your head and neck ~ check!
This is the kind of bed that you want to burrow down deep under the downy-soft covers and order room service for breakfast, lunch and dinner and with 24-hour room service, you can!
Our sparkling clean bathroom featured marble floors, shower and countertops and an over-sized shower head with great water pressure which is so important!
We’ve been asked where we got these fab jammies. Soma Intimates, last season but all their pj’s are amazing! ~ SHOP SOMA NOW
When we weren’t enjoying our bird’s eye view of downtown Greenville from our luxury suite, some quiet time with a great magazine and a steaming cup of coffee were in order.
