Our anniversary was fast approaching, and I didn’t hesitate when my husband asked where I wanted to stay for the ultimate romantic getaway. Belmond Charleston Place has held a special place in the hearts of our family over the years and it was the only place I wanted to celebrate almost thirty years of happiness with the love of my life.

I was honored to receive a behind the scenes tour of Belmond Charleston Place from Public Relations Executive extraordinaire, Audra Poole.  Audra was the ultimate tour guide as she shared inside details about this stunning property, while managing to make me feel as welcome as a dear friend.

Audra explained that Belmond Charleston Place had recently invested over thirty million dollars in renovating this hotel gem, transforming and updating everything from guest rooms, to the fitness center, pool area and bar. Renovations will be completed November 2015.

Every staff member we encountered from the moment we pulled up to the hotel, went above and beyond to provide us with warm and friendly service and we were greeted by name throughout our stay. It was as if each person we encountered made it their personal mission to see that our every request was met to the highest standard.

This commitment to providing world-class service, Audra explained, begins at the top.  Hotel General Manager Paul Stracey, has been with Belmond Charleston Place since 1997, and is committed to creating a memorable experience for each and every guest (mission accomplished, Mr. Stracey!).

I don’t know about you, but I love the exciting anticipation as you are handed a hotel room key.  I wonder… Will we like our room? Will it have that upscale luxury feel perfectly blended with comfort?  Will our room have a view?

The answer for us was a resounding yes, YES, YESSSSS!

Our luxurious suite overlooked the historic premier shopping district that dates back more than 200 years. It was bathed in filtered sunlight by day, the curtains drawn for us at night during the wonderful turndown service.

Our suite was spacious and elegantly appointed, featuring historic detailing with a tranquil palette of blues and grays and period fabrics with wool carpeting. I’m not sure how they pulled off the juxtaposition of such sophisticated style married with a cozy and inviting feel, but they made it happen.

We slept like royalty (did I mention Charleston Place has become the choice of princes and celebrities alike) in the comfy bed with crisp white linens.

Audra shared that they had taken guest surveys before completing the room renovations and had incorporate many of the recommendations into the redesign.
The result is the perfect blending of luxury, comfort and state-of-the-art technology.  With lighting controls at your bedside finger tips, large flat screen televisions and iPod docking stations, no detail was forgotten.

I spent a lovely morning sipping hot coffee in bed, while catching up on my favorite magazines.

Our fabulous bathroom featured marble floors and shower plus an over-sized bathtub (I mean jumbo sized) perfect for a relaxing bubble bath (which I thoroughly enjoyed). The towels were fluffy and abundant and the high-end amenities from the English themed line of Gilchrist & Soames were absolutely divine (consider me officially obsessed).

Plush bathrobes and slippers awaited us in our suite and we wasted no time slipping them on.  Our suite was spotlessly clean, something I am extremely picky about while traveling.

The marble shower was roomy and had not one but two shower heads.

blueberry waffles and bacon room service

We loved our suite so much, we wrapped ourselves in the plush, comfy bathrobes and ordered a scrumptious room service breakfast (room service is offered 24 hours a day).

My better half is rather partial to waffles and the blueberry waffles that arrived were light and fluffy, yet crispy on the outside and bursting with fresh blueberries. The REAL maple syrup and steaming hot coffee were the perfect accompaniments to his delectable breakfast.

While checking into the hotel, we were asked if it was for a special occasion.  Later, we received a thoughtful delivery.  Decadent chocolate dipped strawberries and a bottle of bubbly, along with a cheese and fruit plate and a bottle of wine paired with not one but two cards welcoming us to Belmond Charleston Place. This was southern hospitality at its finest.

After our yummy breakfast, it was time to stretch our legs and experience the sights and sounds of historic Charleston.  We did a little shopping then wandered the historic cobble-stoned streets.  Charleston is a city where romance and history live in perfect harmony and Belmond Charleston Place just so happens to be located smack dab in the heart of the city.

We have much to say about the exceptional meals we experienced during our stay. You can read our restaurant reviews of Palmetto Cafe and Charleston Grill ~ coming soon.

If you are creating your own bucket list, I highly recommend you reserve space for the multiple award-winning Belmond Charleston Place. With a AAA Four-Diamond and Forbes Four-Star designations, as well as recognition in travel publications such as Conde’ Nast Traveler, Southern Living and Wine Spectator, this hotel is truly unforgettable.

May I just add that my favorite thing about Charleston Place is that it’s dog friendly? We can enjoy all this luxury without having to leave Kismet home with a sitter. So many dog friendly restaurants in town, but in winter we love the in-room dining, too!

The dog-friendly aspect of Charleston Place is definitely a selling point for us dog lovers and I thank you for pointing it out, Kristine, because I neglected to mention it in my hotel review. Thanks for your insightful comment and I completely agree ~ we’ll be bringing Bubba and Daisy with us on our next fabulous stay at Charleston Place. Xo Jonet

My husband and I just got back from a wonderful stay at Charleston Place. We were celebrating both of our birthdays. This hotel has become our favorite and it’s because of all the things you wrote about. We feel at home here, yet it is very special, with luxury treatment all the way! Our next time hopefully will be at the Christmas holidays to see all exceptional decorations. ( Love your blog! )

Hi Pam, thanks for your great question. The holidays at Belmond Charleston Place are nothing short of spectacular! They utterly transform the lobby with Christmas trees dripping in lights and ornaments and a fully operational replica of the Orient Express train. Look for it each year on Thanksgiving Day. We stayed there years ago in December and it’s a memory our kids still talk about today. Xo Jonet

What a remarkable post! I am so glad that you shared your photos and experience at the Belmond. My husband and I actually live in Charleston and like most people we tend to overlook the wonderful things our exquisite city has to offer. Wouldn’t it be fantastic if everyone took the time to be a tourist in thier own town. We also have an anniversary coming up soon, I think you have just given me an extraordinary idea!
    Thanks again for sharing.

It has been a while since I have stayed at the Charleston Place, but I will definitely go back based on your review. When I was last there, the rooms were starting to show some wear and tear, so am thrilled about the renovations and it looks as though no expense was spared to ensure that their guests feel like royalty! Thank you for sharing your experience.
