Since the ever increasing number of grey hairs on my noggin have launched a hostile takeover, I am now making a monthly investment in my battle to remain brunette.
Which got me wondering… are there INSIDE SECRETS to make hair color last longer?
I was on a mission to find out and I knew exactly which beauty expert to call. Popular Oregon Hairstylist and color guru, Kirsten Dingman, who has an artistic talent for blending color to create the perfect look for each of her clients.
FCO50: Are there any secrets you can share on making hair color last longer?
KD: Shampoo with a clarifying shampoo and skip conditioner the day of your appointment.
Arrive with clean, completely dry hair, free of any styling or leave-in products. This insures even penetration and deposit of hair color.
FCO50: How long should I wait to wash my hair after it’s been color-treated?
KD: 24 hours is an appropriate amount of time. Use warm, not hot water to avoid opening the hair cuticle and use a color-safe shampoo and conditioner.
Also, use cool water to rinse the conditioner out as this will seal the hair cuticle and hold the color longer.
FCO50: Which color-safe products do you recommend?
KD: Pureology HydrateShampoo and Conditioner are two great products for every hair type.
Deva Curl No-Poois a nice color-safe choice for curly hair. It’s gentle, adds shine and smells great!
FCO50: In your opinion, are color-depositing shampoos and conditioners beneficial?
KD: For blonde and grey/white hair, a shampoo that deposits a violet tone used every other week can be useful for avoiding brassiness.
I wouldn’t recommend using color-depositing shampoos or conditioners for anything besides blonde, grey or white hair, as they can be unpredictable. Too much color-buildup can leave hair dark and looking dull.
FCO50: If washing my hair less often can extend the life of color, do you have any tips for skipping shampoo day?
KD: Use good quality lightweight styling products if possible when doing your hair. That will prevent product buildup and make the time between washing more tolerable.
Dry shampoo can help absorb oil on particularly greasy days. I recommend Klorane Gentle Dry Shampoo. It’s gentle, has a soft smell and comes in a handy travel-size as well as the full-size.
I also highly recommend Oscar Blandi Pronto Dry Shampoo. I love that Pronto goes on clear, gives hair more volume and has a yummy lemon verbena scent!
FCO50: What are color-treated hair’s worst enemies?
KD: Sun exposure, over-washing, heat styling too often (which damages the cuticle and may cause the pigment to be released faster) are the top reasons that hair color fades too fast.
