lipsticks in the spotlight

I’m going to go out on a limb here and guess I’m not the only one who’s made a major lipstick blunder or two. You know the drill, we spend an hour at the cosmetic counter slathering different shades on our smackers, exhuberant when we’ve finally discovered a new lip color that makes us feel like a princess.

I mean, it looked amazing in the store, right? Yet sometimes, we realize when we get our prized new lip color home, it looks completely different in natural light. Our princess might well now be a big green toad. Well that’s a bummer.

Beauty Fact: Most department stores install clear white and LED lighting in beauty departments, which gives customers the impression of a more youthful look and complexion. Jonet

It’s happened to me more times than I can count. Of course, department stores allow returns if you don’t like your purchase. Girlfriends, if I’ve already spent an hour trying on lipstick plus factoring in driving time, I’ll give you 2 to 1 odds I won’t be making a trip back to the mall just to return a tube of lipstick!

So beyond dedicating an entire drawer to our lipstick and beauty castoffs (admit it, we all have one), I put my remaining brain cells to work to find an alternative to returning to the scene of the beauty crime. I started mixing and matching lip colors and the results were down right exhilarating!

Using 3 lip products, I now had 6 lip colors to choose from, three of them, custom! I’m so excited, I just might name them!

Let’s begin with the fabulous matte nude color by NARS in Pigalle ~ I know, freaky name for a lip color, but it’s a fundamental must have lip color for everyone. I say, “let those pigs drink alle (intentional typo)!

I love the neutrality of this color and if you’re a fan of the matte lip, NARS Pigalle will quickly top your beauty fave list.

If you love a nude lip but prefer more shine, for my second look, I layered the NARS with the lip gloss from the tre’Stique Lip Crayon. By combining the two, it created a creamy, yummy nude lip color with a pop of shine!

Now on to one of my favorite new lipstick brands, tre’Stique, which combines a lip crayon color with a hydrating balm with a hint of matching color. I’m using the color Tuscan Wine.

Although I love this product for a bold, evening look, it’s a bit too much for me to wear to a breakfast meeting. That is, until I layered it with the NARS nude color! The addition of a nude color, toned down the dramatic red for a new, day or night approved lip color!

If you’ve been living under a rock and haven’t yet heard about Clinique’s wildly popular Chubby Stick Moisturizing Lip Balms, you are in for a fun and pretty surprise!

The chubbies are buttery smooth and nourishing with a hint of color (26 different shades, to be exact) and one of my favorites is Mega Melon.

It’s a subtle and lovely coral color, but it gets even better when I start with the NARS nude color first.

So the next time you’re unsure about a lip color, try changing it up by layering it with other lipsticks before you throw in the towel. You just might be surprised at your level of beauty ingenuity. Think of the endless and gorgeous custom lip colors you could create all on your own!

Until next time my darlings, remember true beauty comes from within!
