Colorful fall has finally arrived, which will quickly be followed by the frosty days and nights of winter. While we enjoy Mother Nature’s beauty, the dramatic changes in temperature and humidity levels can leave our skin waving the white flag in surrender. Here’s our Survival Guide to Fall & Winter Skincare For Mature Skin.

It’s time to wave a fond farewell to our summer tans (from self tanning products, right?). All the sunscreens, bronzers and tanning products we’ve been using over the summer can leave our pores clogged and skin dull.

Step one to prepping our skin for a healthy fall winter season is to slough away the products and dead skin cells to reveal a smoother, brighter complexion.

Exfoliate

A good cleanser containing micro-exfoliating beads is a gentle way to buff away dead skin and impurities. We love
Philosophy’s Microdelivery Exfoliating Facial Wash.

One of our all time favorite natural beauty lines offers an outstanding exfoliating product that I use several times a week. Juice Beauty’s STEM Cellular Resurfacing Micro-Exfoliant is an organic spa-grade micro-dermabrasion mask. LOVE this product!

Our third favorite exfoliator is actually a tool, and I alternate my exfoliating between the Neutrogena Microdermabrasion System which uses puffs with ultra-fine crystals and mild purifiers which go on a massaging micro-vibrations tool.

Face Moisturizers, & Hyaluronic Acids

The light-weight lotion you’ve slathered over your face this summer has had it’s day in the sun and now it’s setting. The chillier temps will leave your skin in serious need of ultra moisturizing as well as plumping and collagen stimulating ingredients.

If like me, you took the summer off from applying hyaluronic acid products for fear of the dreaded sun spots, fall and winter is the perfect time to start using this important anti-aging product again.

Look for night creams containing the all important hyaluronic acid, a powerful humectant, that not only draws moisture to the skin, it can revitalize the skin’s outer layer!

Apply moisturizer immediately after cleansing, in circular motions to damp skin.

Foundation

Foundation not only improves the look of our skin, hiding imperfections and dark spots, it adds a layer of protection to the skin. Try selecting a fall winter foundation with SPF protection and an extra dose of hydrating ingredients to get you through the seasons.

foundations on a plate

For most of us, our summer foundation is a shade darker than our normal foundation color. To flawlessly ease your way into fall/winter, try mixing your summer and winter foundations together.

Apply a dollop of each foundation color onto a plastic plate or tray. Blend the two colors together, using a bit less of the summer shade each week. Eventually, your “tan” will fade and your fall winter foundation will be a perfect match.

Lips

The winter elements can really take a toll on our delicate smackers. Apply a luscious lipstick to dry, cracked lips, and you will not be ready for your closeup, Mr. DeMille!

So what’s a girl to do? Don’t skimp on hydrating lip balms, glosses and lipsticks with natural oils and ingredients like Shea butter, which will nourish and protect your lips.

Hands

Our hands are often the first place our skin starts to show the signs of “seasonal stress”.

According to the Cleaning Institute, more than 50% of us wash our hands more than ten times each day. To add insult to injury, we often slather on generous coatings of anti bacterial hand sanitizing gels containing alcohol (very drying to the skin) between hand washings. All this leaves our hands begging for a little TLC.

Try applying a hydrating, scrumptious smelling hand lotion after each wash. I always keep a couple of travel sized hand lotions in my bag; that way I can share!

Also, ditch your alcohol-based antibacterial gels for one of the newer products on the market sans alcohol. We LOVE BAC-D, a genius product that sanitizes and kills 99.99 percent of bacteria and viruses, including staph, MRSA, E. Coli and salmonella without drying or irritating skin. I never leave home without it!

Body

Itchy knees, cracking elbows and heels and flaking arms, all the result of a winter dry skin trifecta. You have dryer air, lower humidity levels and the harshness of indoor heat to thank for these seasonal skin problems.

The solution…. try swapping out a steaming hot shower for lukewarm water to avoid stripping the natural oils from your skin.

Dab skin dry and immediately apply an ultra hydrating lotion to damp skin. Before you hit the sheets for the night, show your skin a little more love by slathering on another layer of lotion, from your neck to toesies.
