You’ve probably found yourself from time to time comparing the burgers and fries that you have enjoyed over the years. The French fry/burger dynamic duo is as American as good ole’ apple pie.
I’ve had my share of tasty burgers and fries, but after a recent visit to a cozy Greenville, South Carolina watering hole, I was left utterly speechless as I wolfed down one of their signature burgers and fries.
Although upon first glance The Flat gives the impression of a casual bar, complete with craft beers, whiskies and barstools. In actuality, this Greenville hot spot is actually a surprising gastro pub, with some of the most creative and unforgettable burgers in town!

A great signature burger has two key ingredients, the burger itself and the bun. Failure to slay either component, could result in catastrophic burger failure, something no restaurant or customer wants.
The Flat has mastered both with their impressive burger menu (they do much more than burgers). Their hand pattied burgers are the perfect blend of Short Rib, Brisket and Chuck. I’m not sure if the soft and delicious buns are house made, but they’re so yummy, I’d love to take a dozen home with me!
And then there’s the fries… each burger comes with a generous pile of hand cut, crispy fries, so good, it might bring a tear to your eye.
And now; its burger time!
Let’s start with The Flat’s most popular burger on the menu, the Japple. This might sound a bit wackadoodle, but this is the kind of burger that is so bold and packed with unexpected ingredients and flavor, it will quite literally leave you speechless!
The Japple, like all The Flat burgers, begins with a savory burger patty ground fresh on site daily. To this, they add crispy bourbon bacon, (be still my heart) fresh jalapeños, thinly sliced Granny Smith apples and a layer of goat cheese. The buns are slathered in a layer of butter and toasted to perfection.
Next up, the Hulk Burger, which lives up to it’s name on every level. Let’s just say you’re gonna need a bib and two gigantic hands to hold this baby. It starts with one of their signature burger patties, then a healthy heaping of their homemade smoked to perfection pulled pork, and then a layer of coleslaw. They top that with two crispy onion rings, then add a pickle to the bun for bragging rights.
The Cuban combines two classic favorites into one amazing burger. The Flat burger Pattie is then topped with their smoked pulled pork, melted Swiss cheese, pickles and mustard. For this delectable burger/pork combo, they use a toasted brioche bun. This burger is so sensational, it’ll have you saying “GRACIAS”!
I’m going to go out on a limb here and say that even if you’re not an onion ring fan, you’ll change your mind after one bite of The Flat’s addictive golden rings. The light, ultra crispy hand battered and cut onion rings are sprinkled with house seasoning, and served with chipotle BBQ ranch dipping sauce. Yes, please and thank you!
