She’s Got Style
Today, our She’s Got Style private FCO50 tribe plane (dreaming) is traveling to the picturesque town of Portland Maine to meet our latest She’s Got Style global fashionista.
Tarilyn, a lifelong collector of colorful and shiny things, fashion-lover and shopping enthusiast, introduces us to her vibrant fashion world.
One of the many things we love about Tarilyn, is that she embraces combining color, textures and accessories to create boldly stated OOTD. Join us in Maine, will you darlings?
FCO50: Describe your personal style.
TARILYN: The first words that come to mind are “colorful” and “fun”. Right now I’m leaning heavily towards preppy, because it’s office appropriate, but I also love the embellishments, like beading and embroidery, in boho styles!
A smile gives me an instant facelift and it’s free! Tarilyn
FCO50: We love the way you mix color and prints in your outfits. How do you go about pulling together your outfit of the day?
TARILYN: Thank you! I am motivated by color, especially in prints, so I’ll usually pick one item and build an outfit around it. For example, I have this one skirt that I love which has aqua, pink, taupe, grey and red in it. I’ll start there, then add a top that has one of those colors in it, maybe even a stripe, then build the outfit, adding layers and accessories.
My husband installed a special door hook for me so I can plan my work outfit the night before and be ready for the morning. I use it to try things out to see how they work together. I’m a very visual person but I also put colors and prints together by how they communicate with each other, depending on my mood.
Sometimes I want visual harmony and other times I want the pop-you-in-the-eye effect! It’s a creative and intuitive process and I know I’m done when it “feels” right.
FCO50: We love the bold colors you wear. Any tips you can share on creating a look that’s all your own?
TARILYN: Wear what makes you happy and don’t be afraid to own it! For example, I love statement jewelry and even if I’m only wearing a tee shirt and jeans, I’ll add an oversized bold ring or a pair of big sparkly earrings! Who says rhinestones can only be worn with a party dress?
Don’t be afraid to wear things that make you happy just because of your size or age. There are so many preconceived notions about what you should and shouldn’t wear. I avoided horizontal stripes for so many years even though I love them! Now they are wardrobe staples.
One of my followers on Instagram told me that after 50 she felt like she was too old to wear bright colors any more. This made me so sad, but I understand what she meant. Fashion is designed for young, tall, thin women and we are afraid of looking silly or that we are “trying too hard”.
Dress the body that you have now, not the one you used to have or the one you wish you had. This is so hard for women of all ages, but as we grow older our bodies change in ways we never imagined! I went through a few years when I “punished” myself for weight gain by not buying new clothes. I felt like I didn’t “deserve” to buy anything cute or new in larger sizes.
Consequently, I had a closet full of items I loved but which no longer fit or were ill fitting and that only made me feel bad about myself every time I looked in it.
Eventually, I decided to make a change and literally gutted my closet. It was scary and exhilarating at the same time. Gradually, I’ve rebuilt my wardrobe with pieces that fit and complement my current shape. Do I wish I were thinner or had that hourglass waist? Of course! But I am not going to let that prevent me from wearing fun outfits!
FCO50: Now that you are 40+, how has your style changed?
TARILYN: I have learned, and finally accepted, that some styles just do not work for my body type. I am curvy and very petite (barely 5′ 1″) so no matter how much I love certain pieces on other people, they are not going to be flattering on me and I will not feel comfortable wearing them.
This also means that I am less inclined to buy things just because they are trending. On the flip side, I’m more likely now to try on pieces that are outside my comfort zone – I may not buy them, but at least I tried!
FCO50: What is the one anti-aging product that works for you?
TARILYN: I love beauty products but am not loyal to any one in particular. Honestly, I believe that a positive and happy outlook on life is the best anti-aging ‘thing’ that works for me! A smile gives me an instant facelift and it’s free!
I look at my mom, who is in her 70’s and has experienced tremendous health issues yet she still has the most unbelievable energy and enthusiasm! There’s no product on the market that can provide that! All that aside, bright colored lipstick never lets me down!
