Gravity, in science speak, is the glue that holds together entire galaxies, powerful stuff, right? But when it comes to aging, gravity is not our amigo and in my case, I’ve got the jowls and sagging skin that don’t require a scientist to prove.
In truth, the wrinkles, lines and elasticity changes I’m seeing in my skin are all normal, according to Medical News Today. In a recent article, they report, “When a person is young, the skin springs back, but as they get older, the skin loses its flexibility. Springing back becomes harder and less frequent, resulting in more permanent grooves.”
Sounds about right, since I’m about to celebrate my 55th birthday. Let me begin by saying that on some level, I accept and embrace the lines I see on my face because that means I’ve truly lived, laughed and when I smile, it’s big and wide. According to experts, these repeated expressions too can add to those dreaded lines (not smiling now, serious face!).
With so many advances in non-surgical anti-aging treatments, I thought I’d give injectable fillers a try to see if they actually live up to all the hype. So with my beautiful sister-in-law, Tammy, by my side, I went to see one of the best plastic surgeons in Charlotte, North Carolina, Dr. Vincent Voci.
Dr. Voci has been bringing out the beauty in his patients for almost twenty years. Although I was a bit nervous about having needles repeatedly stuck in my face, after meeting him, I felt at ease, both about the procedure and his skill.
Dr. Voci was kind enough to allow us to video the procedure and you can see the entire video above. We’ve taken you along on the journey from start to finish as well as showing the results both 24 hour and 48 hours post injections.
CROWS FEET & LINES AROUND THE MOUTH
We agreed to target my top three areas of concern, the deep lines around my mouth, crows feet and drooping eyelids. To combat these areas, Dr. Voci used Restylane L to fill the area around my mouth, which provides instant gratification, as you can see the results immediately.
For the crows feet and above my eyebrows, he used Dysport, which takes a few days to “settle” into the treated areas.
I’m not afraid of needles, so that wasn’t the part that had me a bit apprehensive about having my first go with fillers and injections. I wanted something that looked natural and didn’t want to be a walking billboard for having had a little something something done, know what I mean? But Dr. Voci assured me the fillers he was using and how he would use them would give me a natural, more youthful look (and he was right).
DOES IT HURT?
Did the injections hurt? Nope. Dr. Voci gave me the option of having a numbing cream applied to my face prior to the injections. We also used ice around the eye area, as this is a very sensitive parcel of skin real estate. I could feel the injections, but they didn’t cause me pain, if that makes any sense.
WHAT IS RESTYLANE?
Restylane is a Hyaluronic Acid wrinkle treatment that works especially well for smile and laugh lines around the mouth. Hyaluronic Acid is a naturally occurring substance in your skin that helps provide fullness and elasticity, which diminishes as we age. Restylane can, according to Dr. Voci, stimulate collagen in treated areas, in addition to filling in the lines. The results are immediate and should last between six to nine months.
WHAT IS DYSPORT?
Dysport is designed to temporarily improve the look of frown lines. It contains a slightly different chemical variation to Botox, both block nerve signals to the muscles, relaxing them. It is not considered a “filler”. Injections generally lasts between three to six months.
WOULD I DO IT AGAIN?
So was it worth being a human pincushion and would I do it again? I was very pleased with the results, and YES, I’ll do it again. The crevasses around my mouth are significantly improved and the crow’s feet are down to very fine lines, oh happy day!
There are two things I’ll do differently next time. The lines around my mouth were deeper than expected, so on my follow up appointment, Dr. Voci recommended we use Restylane Lift next time, which is a stronger filler. Yup, I’m 55 (almost) and smiling is my favorite fashion accessory.
I would not use the Dysport above my eyebrows again because I didn’t see that big of a difference, but I love how it resolved most of my crow’s feet!
So what do you think? Are fillers or injections something you have done or are considering in the future? Do you have a comment or a question? We’d sure love to hear from you (go to the Comment Box at the end of this post).
My heartfelt thanks for stopping by and for being part of our FCO50 tribe. I’m smiling at you as we speak, so BIG!
