Mary is a big fan of the femininity that comes with wearing a dress.
Jeans also make the top of Mary’s best of fashion list.
Since turning 50, I feel it is a privilege denied to many, so stop with the OMG I’m half a hundred and embrace it. Mary Stocker
Today, our She’s Got Style global fashion show takes us to Perth, Australia to meet the petite devoted wife and mother of three, Mary Stocker. Mary describes denim jeans as her BFF and tells us a simple dress and great pair of heels makes a woman feel more feminine.
But this beauty from Down Under isn’t your ordinary fashionista. Mary believes in giving back and has poured her kind heart into volunteering for hospice and women undergoing treatment for cancer.
Working with these cancer warriors gave Mary a profound appreciation for life, reminding her that reaching the age of fifty-something is a gift we should all cherish instead of focusing on every new line and grey hair. We couldn’t agree with you more, dear Mary.
FCO50: Describe your personal style.
MARY: My style has changed over the years, it’s become more about what suits me and what’s comfortable, as opposed to what is trending. I know what colors suit me, and stick with them.
In Winter, I just about live in jeans, my universal uniform. In Spring and Summer, it’s dresses, I love the practicality of them and feel confident wearing them, and being petite, a great shoe is never underestimated.
FCO50: What fashion trends are hot right now in Australia?
MARY: Jeans and leggings with all kinds of boots, are seen everywhere and a lot of draped cardigans. It’s our winter and it’s cold, believe it or not. We don’t seem to dress up as much as Europeans, which is a shame, I would rather be slightly overdressed than underdressed.
FCO50: What’s your favorite piece of clothing?
MARY: Dresses are my favourite item of clothing with flats or heels depending on where I’m going, I love that a pair of shoes can lift an outfit. The inspiring Diane Von Furstenburg said, ‘Feel like a woman and wear a dress’.
FCO50: You are petite, can you give us some shopping and styling tips for the petite woman?
MARY: Being petite doesn’t bother me, I know what suits me, I don’t go for lot’s of frills or A line dresses. I tend to wear a lot of figure hugging dresses. Simplicity and beautiful detail’s work well. I love Audrey Hepburn and Jackie O’s style. It also helps if you have a good alteration lady on hand, as most dresses need to be taken up. The up side to being petite is that I wear heels a lot!
FCO50: What’s the one anti-aging beauty product you can’t live without?
MARY: I used to be a Beauty Therapist, so skincare is important to me. If I had to pick one product, it would be a moisturizer with SPF sun factor, we really need it for our climate. Also eye creme, an exfoliant, I could go on.
MARY STOCKER IN HER OWN WORDS
My name is Mary, I have been married for thirty years with a daughter and two sons who have all left home but live very close by. I’m in my mid fifties and petite, which is a challenge in itself.
I live in Perth Western Australia and our climate is hot. We are coming into Spring which is my favorite time of year. So out come the dresses and away go the jumpers and jackets.
Since turning 50, I’m 56 now, nothing much has changed, except a new friend called gravity, so I am more aware of trying to maintain a healthy and strong body. I used to do a lot of volunteering for our hospice, and also women undergoing treatment for cancer. Since turning 50, I feel it is a privilege denied to many, so stop with the OMG I’m half a hundred and embrace it.
I had a granddaughter born the day before my 50th birthday, that helped me also realize how fortunate I am to see the beauty in the next chapter of my journey.
Thank you, Mary for sharing your style and life with our FCO50 tribe. There’s no doubt you touched many lives with your kind heart and volunteer work.
Where shall we go next, my darlings? Get ready because we are going to Slovakia to meet our next fabulous global fashionista. Vidíme sa tam, see you there in Slovak!
